King Mango Strut

Today was the annual King Mango Strut in Coconut Grove - the tea party of parody and sattire.  Em and Chris had front row seats which attracted a lot of attention from the passing participants.  The weather was more than perfect and the crowd was every bit happy.

The Arts

Tonight was my company holiday party.  Every year it has a theme, thus making it an elaborate costume party.  This year was 'The Arts.'  This year was also the first year I was unable to attend.  Super bummed because I'm stuck out in LA on a job and i'm missing the best god damn party of the year.  Well, I should say that I am primarily bummed out because I thought I had a fucking dope idea for a costume.
Here it is.

I was going to be Damien Hirst's "For the Love of God" - the famous diamond encrusted human skull.  I actually had this thing planned for about a month and I would not tell anyone because it was that good.  I was going to wear a black spandex body suit, muting my body from the scene.  The only thing you would have seen was my head covered in a bling.  I found a mask on ebay that looked identical to his skull.  I even bought diamond rhinestones to bedazzle the thing.  I was going to look legit.  No joke.  So, as it turned out, I didn't get to pull it off for this particular party, but that isn't to say I don't have my Halloween costume planned for 2010.

Upgrade

I know i'm usually too nice to people.  A glass of wine spilled on me, no complaints.  Lost baggage, a few grumblings but on with the trip.  No wake up call morning of the shoot, we wont talk about that.  But, I think generally I'm too nice.  Tonight I returned to me place (my hotel room occassionly known as my second home) after working a 14 hour day, to find my bathroom totally flooded with what I could only describe as the goo from Ghostbusters.  I mean it was everywhere.  But mainly sourcing from the sink, which was of course my one destination to wash my face and brush my teeth.  Normally, I would have ignored a little water spill and addressed in the morning, but this was pretty intolerable.  So when I called down to the front desk, Danny was to my rescue before I could even put the phone back on the receiver.  He absolutely refused to let me sleep there for the night and insisted I change rooms.  When I tried to object he handed me a room key for a new room and told me my belongings would be transfered in the morning.  So here I am now in an ocean side suite, feeling like im on finally ona destination vacation for what will probably last the next 6 hours until I wake up and get back to the nitty gritty.  I guess point is, being too nice aint such a bad thing.  Tomorrow we're popping the champagne.

The Worst and the Best

in the hospitals and jails
it's the worst
in madhouses
it's the worst
in penthouses
it's the worst
in skid row flophouses
it's the worst
at poetry readings
at rock concerts
at benefits for the disabled
it's the worst
at funerals
at weddings
it's the worst
at parades
at skating rinks
at sexual orgies
it's the worst
at midnight
at 3 a.m.
at 5:45 p.m.
it's the worst
falling through the sky
firing squads
that's the best
thinking of India
looking at popcorn stands
watching the bull get the matador
that's the best
boxed lightbulbs
an old dog scratching
peanuts in a celluloid bag
that's the best
spraying roaches
a clean pair of stockings
natural guts defeating natural talent
that's the best
in front of firing squads
throwing crusts to seagulls
slicing tomatoes
that's the best
rugs with cigarette burns
cracks in sidewalks
waitresses still sane
that's the best

my hands dead
my heart dead
silence
adagio of rocks
the world ablaze
that's the best
for me.
-Charles Bukowski

About 12 years ago, when I was first introduced to Bukowski, I was asked to write my own rendition of his poem, "The Worst and the Best." I remember reading his and thinking, but wait, rock concerts are the best!  I really appreciated this assignment because I could completely rewrite my own worst vs. best with no wrong answers.  I still have my copy back home which I will be digging up when I go back in a week.

Drive Green

I've been cruising around LA in no other but a black Toyota Prius.  They're pretty goofy looking cars.  But then you start seeing them everywhere.  Like they're some kind of hot item (which I guess technically they are).  And you pass your friend on Main street in the same ride and it feels kind of good.  Not to mention they are good and green.  I mean you can't even hear the engine!  And then you get picked up in your other friends ride and it's the staple ride of LA - the Prius!   And sure enough you're having a vehicle love affair.  I actually really dig this ride and am thinking about possibly getting one in the future.  There is something sort of charming about the car.  Reminds me of a Disney character or something. Peter the Prius.

New Camera

I asked my friend David if he would get me this Leica M7 Hermes limited edition
camera pricing at, oh about $15k.  He said he would see what he could do:

So yesterday, in the mail, I received an unmarked letter with this:

I thought it was the sweetest surprise.

For so long I avoided watching this movie.  I thought I would hate it.  Man, I couldn't have been more wrong about a movie.  It was fucking awesome.  So intense and bloody and and and hottt.

Living Alone

Could be one of the most liberating feelings in the world for most people.  And it is.  Until you get sick.  And then it becomes the lonliest, most pathetic feeling in the world.  Giant Baby Syndrom.  Where all you want is someone to take care of you and bring you soup and orange juice and tuck you into a cocoon to stay warm.  I guess it has been well over a year since I've felt this crummy and man it is not fun.  Not at all.

MoMA

While visiting the city, I was able to make a stop at the MoMA for the greatly anticipated Tim Burton exhibit.  While no photogrpahy was allowed and I don't have much to share visually, I will say it was definitely worth the brief trip through the mind of one of the most brilliant writers/illustrators today.  Walls were lined with various works dating back to the 70's when he was just a kid in school to his most recent works for major motion films.

Also got to check out Looking at Music: Side 2 which was cool.

The architecure and design was fabulous, as always.  Did not browse the Bauhaus exhibit, ONLY because I just went to an entire Bahuhaus museum during my month stint in Germany.

Stumbled upon Paul McCarthy's Penis Hat, an intimidating and wretched pirate whose phallic weaponry alludes to warfare and sexual conquest.

Glögg

Also known as 'Mulled Wine', this is a Swedish tradition we make every year during Thanksgiving and Christmas.  A mixture of Burgendy,Brandy, Port and several spices, believe me when I tell you this will keep you warm during subzero weather and knock you off your rocker.  This year we were at my brothers studio apartment in NYC, which made for an interesting round of bumper butts, but didn't stop us from lighting up the old family recipe.  Below is video of the ceremony:
