The Weird Tragedy

I'm actually not done talking about Beautiful Losers as I really was just so inspired by this group of artists and their stories.  There is a part where they talk about supporting each other by doing the complete opposite of what they teach you in art school - to criticize.  And this really got me thinking about something I did about a month ago.  My friend Jared recently returned from a month-long trip to Santa Monica bringing back some beautiful pictures he captured along the way.

I have been to Santa Monica on more than a few occasions and am pretty familiar with this special city, including it's street art.  There is a particular artist there, Chase, whose work frequents the walls surrounding the cruisers and beach bums.  When I saw Jared discovered this artist through one of his photographs, I immediately falsely reacted.  I made some horribly rude comment not only to Jared's photo but about the artist, calling him shit.  Geez, I'm such an asshole!

So I'm watching this documentary about art and support and love and basically realizing I had no business making said comment about this dude who is actually getting out there and making something he finds beautiful, while I sit back and envy him and every other street artist for their talents.  

And then Ed Templeton said something in the documentary that stuck with me...and I got a bit sad: "...the weird tragedy is that when you become an adult, you grow up and lose that, you stop creating, you stop involving yourself in the joy of coloring and creation and stuff.  and I just feel like I was lucky enough to never really lose that"

Beautiful Losers

In the 1990s, a loose-knit group of American artists and creators, many just out of their teens, began their careers in just such a way that was influenced by the popular underground youth subcultures of the day, such as skateboarding, graffiti, street fashion and independent music.   This inspiring documentary features today's well-known artists such as Shepard Fairey, Mark Gonzales, Spike Jonze, Margaret Kilgallen, Mike Mills, Barry McGee, Phil Frost, Chris Johanson, Harmony Korine, and Ed Templeton.  As you watch each artist tell their story, you learn that they began to create art that reflected the lifestyles they led.  Many had no formal training and almost no conception of the inner workings of the art world. They learned their crafts through practice, trial and error, and good old-fashioned innovation.  The world of art has been greatly affected by their accomplishments.  A bona fide adventure about friendship, love, ART, music, life and discovering self and beauty.

Cravings

I am hardcore craving an insanely delicious quesadilla.  I just saw a picture of one from the Border Grill Truck in Los Angeles and now I am literally drooling on myself.  The question is, when is someone going to start a taco truck in Boulder, CO?

To Have and To Hold

I fucking miss this so much.  Dancing.  The non-verbal form of expression and communication.  I'm not sure why I stopped.  Or rather, paused.  I still feel it inside of me.  I always will.  So why not do something about it?  Sometimes I think I'm too old.  I dont have the same body.  Body strength.  Which is an absolutely terrible excuse.  Being in New York really triggered my passion.  God, it's so alive there.  There is so much talent and beauty and pain and loss passing you by on every corner.  It's unbelievable.
